Intelligent Reasoning Systems adds lead-level inspection to its automated optical inspection systems

Keywords Automated optical inspection, IRSI

A significant new capability lead-level inspection has been added to the automated inspection and measurement station (AIMS™) from Intelligent Reasoning Systems, Inc. (IRSI) (http://www.irsinc. com). AIMS is the printed wiring assembly (PWAs) industry's only adaptive, automated optical inspection (AOI) system. It detects and classifies defects in highly complex PWAs using a patent-pending, knowledge-based image analysis engine.

The new AIMS system adds lead-level inspection, which detects solder bridges, near bridges, insufficient or excess solder, as well as bent, missing, and lifted leads. AIMS already includes robust capabilities for component-level inspection, including missing parts, wrong parts, wrong polarity, and x, y, and theta displacement. AIMS provides the widest fault coverage available today.

An enhanced user interface provides additional automated processes, off-line training, and advanced operator tools for defect subclassification, defect analysis, and new part definition.

AIMS provides proven benefits:

  • No programming: just load CAD data, scan two blank boards and two populated boards, and it is ready to start inspecting.

  • Eliminates false calls: for example, with a few mouse clicks, AlMS quickly learns to switch between acceptable but different component types.

  • Provides real-time feedback: AIMS produces process control data to pinpoint sources of defects for continuous process optimization.

The system's ability to target the sources of defects allows process control engineers to catch defects early and take corrective action. AIMS adds the critical elements of consistency, repeatability, and speed to yield-improvement processes, allowing PWA manufacturers to work toward the goal of reaching six sigma defect levels.

AIMS is modular in both functionality and speed and is competitively priced.
