The sun shone down on the 21 teams, totalling 81 golfers, that took part in the recent SMART Group Corporate Golf Day. The day comprised a nine hole Texas Scramble, then an 18 hole individual and team Stableford competitions. Some of the companies taking part sponsored nine of the holes with prizes. There was also a putting competition. The SMART Group sponsored a hole in one at the 152 yard 10th hole. The prize for this was a Ford Fiesta car. Unfortunately, no one got a hole in one.
There was one humorous incident, Fraser Nimmo of Multicore started using a Dunlop 65 ball which he said he just took out of his bag (these balls were discontinued and have not been legal for the last 20 years). A mean Scot by any chance? Anyway, he went on to win the booby prize with two Stableford points!
The team winners for the second year running were the DEK team of Richard Bettley, Peter Marshall, Jim Sinclair and Phil Anderson. The individual Stableford winner with 40 points was Tom Hendrie (handicap 3, gross score of 70 on a par of 72!)
Second was Richard Bettley with 39 points (handicap 14). Third was Steve MacLean with 35 (handicap 6).
The event was also registered with the Times Mees Pierson Corporate Golf Challenge and hopefully if we all scored well, four will be in the regional finals at The Dukes Course in St Andrews on 1 October 1999, the four being Tom Hendrie, Richard Bettley, Gordon Clark and Jim Wilson.
Many thanks to all the sponsors, especially Reeds for the sponsorship of the photographs (all the teams got their photographs taken on the first tee, and all the members got a photo to keep).
After high tea there was a guest speaker, Stuart Coull, who was very entertaining and went down well with the audience. After that, the prize giving and then ten pin bowling, which stopped at 12.30 (I think!)
Next year's date for the golf day will be held on Friday 16 June 2000.
