New £1.4 million project aims to boost business opportunities for electronics industry

TWI has just launched a £l.4 million project to build a centre of excellence promoting best practice in printed circuit board (PCB) assembly techniques and training.

Based at TWI North, Middlesbrough, the new two-year programme aims to boost business opportunities for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in North East England, through a range of activities supported by the ERDF and the ESF.

The centre will house a comprehensive range of equipment, enabling local companies to try state-of-the-art PCB assembly and soldering technology on their existing products and prototypes. Expert advice will be available to help them select which technology is best for their needs, before purchasing potentially expensive capital equipment.

The facility will also address the increasing environmental pressures to remove lead from solder products and bromine flame-retardants from PCB materials. A series of technical workshops covering the specific challenges will be organised and regular bulletins will be produced.

The centre will be supported by TWI's Microtechnology Centre at Cambridge, which has over 35 years experience of electronic packaging and soldering.

An enquiry desk has been set up, offering technical advice and assistance, as well as training and general information.

TWI North is looking for equipment suppliers and manufacturers who are interested in collaborating in this venture.

Please contact Janette Whiting at TWI (Tel: 01223 891162; Fax: 01223 892588; E-mail: react@twi.co.uk) for more information on this project or if you want to know how your company can get involved.
