IPC and National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (NEMI) have announced that work on IPC-2541, Generic Requirements for Electronic Manufacturing Shopfloor Communications (CAMX) has been completed, and the document is ready for review and comment.

"This standardization effort and the ability to bring IPC-2541 to the proposal stage represents great cooperation of many individuals from companies such as Siemens, Universal Instruments and Lucent Technologies", says Bob Neal, Agilent Technologies, chairman of the test and inspection sectional standard committee (IPC-2547, Sectional Requirements for Shopfloor Electronic Inspection and Test Equipment Communication).

Development of this standard has been supported by NEMI's Plug and Play Factory project committee, and is tied into the NEMI Virtual Factory Information Interchange Project (VFIIP), which is creating the concepts for standardized supply chain communication.

IPC-2541, the first of three standards that are being developed to address shopfloor communication, identifies the generic requirements of the XML messaging for the CAMX series. The other two standards slated for development are IPC-2546, Sectional Requirements for Shopfloor Electronic Assembly Equipment Communication, and IPC-2547.
