SMarT feed system feeds bulk SMT components directly to pick and place

Keyword: Feeders

SMarT Feed from Cambridge Automatic (see Plate 2) is a unique bulk feeder that mates with an SMT placement machine, feeding bulk (loose) interconnect parts directly to the placer. In addition to cutting prepackaging costs associated with tape and reel, SMarT Feed also enables the placement machine to feed pins or sockets in paste, minimizing or eliminating the need for wave or selective soldering in many applications. Part types include sockets, pins, stand-offs, and spacers, among others.

The SMarT Feed system is designed to separate, feed and present loose, surface-mountable parts to the vacuum pick-up head of virtually any placement machine. SMarT Feed's vibratory bowl can be placed anywhere close to the pick and place system. Parts are fed through a tube to the feeder head that can be positioned in a regular feeder slot and quickly changed.

Parts are transferred through a feed tube to the pick-up location. Once a part has been "picked" by the vacuum head of the placement system, another part is automatically delivered. No optical, electrical or umbilical link to the pick and place system is required. The SMarT Feed's sensor automatically rejects parts that are out of spec, eliminating downtime associated with defective components.

The compact feeder head connects to a single slot on the placement system. Adaptor plates allow the feeder to be used on different machines from various manufacturers. The feeder is designed to position easily or be removed quickly in order to accomplish rapid change-overs as required.
