One wonders what one should say or write when it is their last opportunity to do so? (I am resigning as editor after three years.) Should I approach it with a sense of gravity; a sense of disappointment; a sense of relief; a unique opportunity to have the final word? Should I try to wax professorially eloquent on new research, books, and projects that I am embarking on? Should I try to summarize all the prior thoughts and significant findings funneled through me for the past three years? What I do feel is a sense of pride for representing such a distinguished publisher as Emerald, and their superb staff. I also have a deep sense of gratitude for having had this opportunity. My privilege was to be part of such a rich process of having a first look at some of the excellent research and thinking in the fields of Information and Knowledge Management. Many authors have entrusted to me their ideas and experiences. They have enriched my life with new relationships; some more binding than others, but still, relationships. They have added to my own information and knowledge repository. I am ever grateful to them. They wrote from the various continents and corners of our world; they represented a host of professions and disciplines; they are the present and future of our information and knowledge world.

As evidence, this journal contains several excellent portfolio articles, highlighting and summarizing some of the issues in learning, technology, and law that are shaping our environment; an executive interview by a dear colleague and friend, Bill Millward, founder and CEO of Addx Corporation. Addx was recently recognized as one of the Fastest Growing Private Companies in America, and inclusion in Washington Technology Fast 50. Bill has been on the cutting edge of KM, and from his interview, you can see exactly how invaluable a resource he is to the field of information and knowledge management. Our articles again cover a broad range of topics from noted scholars and practitioners on knowledge, intelligence, leadership, business intelligence, how the mind works; to some lessons learned, a proposed model for practitioners of KM, and three case studies involving university-industry and government collaboration and initiatives. I am always amazed at both the diversity and richness of these inputs.

I am ever grateful to: Joanne Freeman, who was, without any doubt, my right and left hands; the Portfolio Editors for their quarterly inputs … ever so insightful into their domains: Alex and Dave Bennet, Francesco Calabrese, Cynthia Gayton, Anne Green, Kent Greenes, Theresa Jefferson, Mirghani Mohamed Art Murray, and Julie Ryan; the many associates who skilfully reviewed and commented on the articles and books; the many faithful contributors, who thought of us as their first journal of choice for their thoughts; to the many executives who shared their stories and experience with us … what invaluable lessons and insights; the book reviewers, who ploughed through the many pages to give us their best judgments; the VINE team of Diane Heath, Lizzie Scott, Sarah Robinson, and the many others behind the scenes at Emerald who make the print and electronic things of VINE happen.

VINE …what a way to describe such an enterprise. I am a wine lover (who could not be after living in France for three years). Our VINE was abundant and fruitful during my tenure as editor. Thanks to all who made it so. May it continue to nourish all who come in contact with it.
