Out with the old

Out with the old

Of course, you have all replaced your fire safety EXIT signs to include a pictogram (in line with new safety regulations introduced in January). This item is simply to remind you to dispose carefully of the old signs or run the risk of prosecution by the Environment Agency. Many older EXIT signs are not electrically powered, but self-luminous as they contain the radioactive gas tritium in sealed glass tubes. Although completely safe in normal use, incorrect disposal of these signs can lead to radioactive contamination in the environment, for example in landfill sites. Anyone with a sign containing tritium which they no longer require should return it to the manufacturer or to a specialised, authorised disposal contractor. They must not be disposed of with ordinary refuse, or prosecution could result. Anyone with any queries about the disposal of these signs should contact their local Environment Agency office on 0645 333111.
