IBM continues to push forward the frontiers of data storage and has claimed three hard drive world records for:
- •
the world's highest capacity notebook PC hard drive - the Travelstar 25GS;
- •
the new 12GB Travelstar 12GN for ultra-portables; and
- •
an 18GB drive for mainstream notebook users.
The Travelstar 25GS is designed for premium notebook PCs and holds four times as much data as the average notebook hard drive. The drive holds 25 gigabytes (GB), the equivalent of either 20 TV-quality movies, 792ft of shelved books or seven million pages of text. At 5,400 revolutions per minute (rpm), the new Travelstar 25GS drive has the highest rpm of any notebook PC hard drive, contributing to significantly higher performance. IBM's new 12GB Travelstar 12GN for ultra-portables is claimed to be the world's most rugged hard drive. Notebook computers are at their most vulnerable when they are turned off and being transported. If bumped or dropped, there is less chance that damage or data loss will occur with a more rugged disk drive such as Travelstar 12GN. IBM also today introduced an 18GB drive for mainstream notebook users. Travelstar 18GT holds the text of 18 pickup trucks full of paper.
Applications and the need for portability are driving demand. The portable PC market is expected to grow to exceed 30 million units worldwide and the market for hard disk drives will continue to expand in both capacity of storage and number of units. The Internet, digital photography, and offerings such as games, music and video have made the need for larger storage a reality and customers will soon start to fill these massive storage repositories.
