Intel Corporation and Nortel Networks have announced plans to work together to enable a new generation of software programmable networking devices. The plans call for Nortel Networks to add elements of its Open IP Environment to Intel's Internet Exchange (IX) Architecture. The combination will provide developers with a comprehensive, open platform for building advanced networking equipment based on the IX Architecture. The focus of the joint effort will revolve around three key components: interoperability, joint marketing and developer's kits. Together, the companies will work to enable interoperability between the IXP1200 network processor from Level One, an Intel company, and elements of Nortel Networks Open IP Environment. In addition, the companies will participate in joint marketing programs whereby Nortel will market elements of its Open IP Environment as a core building block component of the IX Architecture while Intel will reference this software to other IX Architecture developers. Finally, Intel will include the elements of Nortel Networks Open IP Environment software to its IXP1200 developer's kit to make it easier for third-party developers to create flexible network solutions based on Intel's Internet Exchange Architecture.
