Net gain

BT is just completing a massive expansion plan for its Internet Protocol (IP) backbone network in the UK. It will be 60 times faster and able to grow to 300 times the capacity of the previous IP network. The project has expanded dramatically the IP backbone network from 14 to 103 points of presence (POP), using a high-speed, high-capacity multi-service broadband platform. This gives BT the greatest number of access points of any UK IP network, opening the way to significantly faster and more efficient on-line communications for residential and business customers. The latest multi-gigabit router technology and wave division multiplexing (WDM) optical fibre systems, give BT's IP backbone network the dramatic increases in speed and capacity. BT is also deploying 100,000 extra IP dial ports (the modem gateway to the Internet network) by April, with up to a further 100,000 planned by September. About one in every four calls made across BT's networks is for IP. The IP dial access market alone is now at about 35 billion call minutes and will grow to 140 billion call minutes by March 2004.
