Gallaher, the largest manufacturer of tobacco products for the UK, has launched a Web site containing over half a million company documents – http://www.gallaher-docs.com
Since smoking and health issues arose in the UK during the 1950s, one question has been frequently asked: "What did the UK tobacco companies know?" Gallaher has voluntarily decided to create a Web site of its corporate history related to smoking and health issues. The Web site went live in September. It was in giving evidence to the House of Commons Select Committee on Health in January 2000 that Gallaher's Chairman Peter Wilson announced that Gallaher was prepared to consider publishing documents on the Internet.
In providing public access to its internal documentation, voluntarily, Gallaher is providing the means to assist those who are interested to explore Gallaher's history from the perspective of what is recorded in its files. Many of the documents contained in the archive were written more than 20 years ago and reflect the personal views and writing styles of their authors. These documents should be considered from a contemporaneous historical perspective, rather than with the benefit of hindsight.
