In a world of increasing globalisation, the stakes are raised in terms of competitiveness. Competitiveness now means competing on the world stage, in deregulated markets, in connected economies. Available technologies go some way to assisting developing nations and smaller organisations "catch up" with their better-developed and bigger neighbours, but for nations and organisations there is an underlying infrastructure for competitiveness. This book deals with both the public and private sector issues. It analyses competitiveness and suggests roles for governments (citing some recent experiences) in ennabling and supporting competitiveness. It then goes on to examine corporate transformation, the need for flexibility and changed structures, the underpinning importance of entrepreneurship and of valuing talent. It examines "best value" organisations and draws lessons relating to innovation and creativity before "closing the circle" by examining issues around the social dialogue necessary to ensure that wealth is both created and shared.
