The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 firmly placed the issue of disability on managers' agenda. Organisations with 15 or more employees are not allowed to discriminate unfairly against disabled people, and are required to put in place reasonable adjustments to their working practices to allow equal opportunities for disabled people to work effectively. Ignorance of the law may lead to complaints and the possibility of unlimited compensation awarded against them.

This second edition unravels for the reader the many uncertainties about the requirements of the Act and explains how to turn these requirements into opportunities. The book includes many real-life case studies and new material on the role of Disability Rights Commission, which was established in April 2000.

This book offers managers practical approaches to the issue of disability discrimination, including:

  • the employment implications for an organisation;

  • the business case for employing disabled people;

  • how to develop a comprehensive and effective policy;

  • how to put that policy into practice.

This is not a hectoring book, though it does stress the importance of complying with the Act; it is a guide to managers and offers a step-by-step approach to maximizing the benefits of employing disabled people.
