The Geodis group in France has signed a new contract with IBM covering the collection of IBM's hardware at the end of the leasing period from its user customers Europe-wide: i.e. almost 100,000 units per year (PCs or servers). Geodis collects these IBM products from the customers' sites (mainly companies), packs them, then routes them to two sites dedicated to reconditioning:

  1. 1.

    Montpellier for systems and larger servers;

  2. 2.

    Mainz, in Germany, on a 16,000m2 platform, where 100 persons recondition or dismantle the PCs and small servers.

A comprehensive technical service is offered, from receiving the equipment to the reshipping of reconditioned second-hand products. The various operations carried out by Geodis in Mainz on PCs, are mainly: reconfiguration, repair, loading the software, cleaning, dismantling tests, recovery of sensitive or dangerous products, etc. The whole process is run by the Geodis supply chain management application, "SCIM", providing IBM with complete trace ability at all stages. This new contract, following on from last May's contract, covering Geodis' management of the IBM world logistics platform for the "server manufacture" business, strengthens the partnership between Geodis and IBM. This partnership started in 1998 for IBM's logistics activities in France, Germany and Italy, and was extended in 1999 to Spain and Portugal.
