The seven member nations of the Asean Ports Association (APA) plan to enhance regional maritime security by developing a shared database of vessel, cargo and shipper particulars, headed by Singapore. Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines are in the "planning stages" of improving their port information exchange. The move is in addition to a planned programme to develop a collective "Electronic Data Processing (EDP) Information System on Dangerous Goods in Asean", to be undertaken using Asean support funding.

The system will share dangerous cargo declarations among all members electronically in order to track vessels carrying the materials, allowing quick response to any incidents that could pose a threat, including casualties, spillage or piracy attacks.
