| Abstract: | A survey of the career patterns of librarians in the Ministry of Defence was carried out in 1992. At the time it was the most comprehensive survey on the topic carried out in any government department in the UK. Provides data on choice of career, professional qualifications, career history in librarianship, singleton posts, mobility, career breaks Civil Service careers, alternative working patterns, present jobs, job description, future career plans, background information and attitudes. Finds that the career patterns of staff in government libraries do not differ greatly from those in other types of library, but there is much frustration and uncertainty about the future. Suggests that the Civil Service system does not always work as it is intended to. |
