Abstract:Focuses on women, mentoring and leadership in the corporate world. Summarizes research on women in management and explains the differentials between male and female employees. Raises issues around structural and systemic bottlenecks such as old boys' networks, identity groups, race, and organization groups, as they apply to women in organizations. Discusses the impact of mentors and sponsors in career-upward mobility. Shows that the perception of “equal opportunities” differs very much across companies. Demonstrates a new set of ideas for mobilizing women – covering “self-emancipation”, commitment and enforcing implementation – that can have useful performance implications and which will be of value to the practising women executive. Argues that the key to success is to “Look outwards and add value; clarify your organizational quality vision for women's career development and affirmative action and spot spirit killers that stifle initiative”.
