Stuart James, University of Paisley

Stuart James is the former University Librarian, University of Paisley, a post he held from 1989 to 2007, having previously been Deputy Librarian for ten years. In recent years, he has pioneered cross-sectoral collaboration with public, college and other libraries across west and south-west Scotland, and has been Chairman of the Ayrshire Libraries Forum since its inception in 1998.

He is involved in a wide range of professional activities which have included long involvement with the Library Association's Cataloguing and Indexing Group (was winner of the 1999 Alan Jeffreys Award for services to the Group's fields of interest), membership of the British Library's National Bibliographic Service Advisory Committee, Convenor of the Scottish Academic Libraries Co-operative Training Group, external examiner at The Robert Gordon University and membership of the Library Association's Registration Board.

He was founder Chairman of the Library and Learning Support Groups of both the Open Learning Foundation and of the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities. He has also been the Chairman of the Planning Committee for the influential annual Information for Scotland Conferences since their inception in 1993.

Having been Vice-President for two years, he was President of the Scottish Library Association for 2001. He is a regular contributor of reviews to journals, and a regular speaker at library conferences.
