Winner of the 2009 Lita/Library Hi Tech winner announced

United Kingdom, March 2009 – Emerald Group Publishing is delighted to announce that Meredith Farkas, Head of Instructional Initiatives at Norwich University in Vermont, USA, was named this year’s winner of the LITA / Library Hi Tech Award.

 Each year the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), division of the American Library Association (ALA), and Library Hi Tech, published by Emerald, award a $1,000 prize recompensing outstanding achievement in communicating to educate practitioners within the library field in library and information technology.

 Michael Seadle, Editor of Library Hi Tech, comments: “Meredith Farkas represents the practical application of cutting edge library technology that Library Hi Tech has fostered since its inception. In her hands the Web 2.0 technologies are not merely add-ons, but integral to the ways of thinking and types of service that we as librarians offer.”

Throughout her career, Meredith Farkas has been committed to sharing knowledge and supporting the affordable professional development opportunities for library workers. She was the creative force behind the online course “Five Weeks to a Social Library”. Her blog, “Information wants to be free”, provides valuable information about online learning opportunities. She is also the author of “Social Software in Libraries: Building Collaboration, Communication and Community Online” and was on Library Journal’s Movers and Shakers list in 2006. 

The award will be presented at the LITA President's Program on Sunday, July 12, at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois.

Library Hi Tech focuses upon computing and technology for the library community. It is international in scope and defines technology in the broadest possible terms to include the full range of tools employed by librarians and their customers.
