Design for Producibility in Swedish Manufacturing Industries

Matts Carlsson (Matts Carlsson (MSc, MBA, Lic. Eng., PhD) is Associate professor of Quality and Reliability Management at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. His research work has been focused on different aspects in the areas of management of product development and quality management, e.g. integration of technical functions, management of product development processes and implementation of “total quality management” concepts. The results have been presented internationally in several conferences, reviewed and published as articles, i.e. in Strategic Direction, Technology Strategies, Journal of Product Innovation Management, International Journal of Production Research, R&D Management, Journal of Quality and Reliability Engineering International, Managing Changes in Operations. He is a former member of the MIT project “International Motor Vehicle Program”, is currently working in the EG/Comett programme “World Class Manufacturing” and with research in the area of quality management and management of product development at Gothenburg Research Institute. He can be contacted at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, College of Applied Engineering and Maritime Studies, Chalmers University of Technology, Box 8873, S‐402 72 Gothenburg, Sweden. Michael Egan (Michael Egan (B.Eng. Hons, A.M.I.Mech.E.) is a research assistant at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. His research is in the integration between TQM and product development, especially in the use of tools as a link between the two fields. Recently he has concentrated on DFA and DFM tools, their applicability and implementation implications within organizations. After graduating from Hull University in 1989 he worked for two years in the UK as a Project Engineer, CAD Development Engineer and finally Quality Engineer before moving to Sweden in 1991. Abstract

Describes how several analyses of ease of production have been carried out in Swedish companies. The results concerning the possibilities of rationalization are clearly positive. However, the companies investigated have themselves only, to a very limited extent, assimilated the knowledge of or implemented the DFP methods. In the investigation reported on, the most important causes of this situation are described. Also discusses the need for additional studies within the area.
