Conciliation procedure on food irradiation to be continued

At its meeting on Thursday 15 October 1998, the EP and Council Conciliation Committee could not reach agreement on the Directive on foods treated with ionizing radiation. The only outstanding issue was the question of the use of analytic test methods.

The EP amendment required that Member States should ensure that European-wide validated methods were available in all member states to detect radiation. The Council position left open the possibility of using methods which were neither standardised nor validated.

The EP delegation put forward a new compromise proposal, but the Council was not able to accept it nor make a counter proposal.
