The Library of California (LOC) and the University of California's California Digital Library (CDL) will soon be providing joint services as the largest state digital library in the US. The cooperative project will increase access to information to unprecedented levels. The LOC was created to link all of the libraries in the state electronically and to foster the development of regional networks to reduce duplication of efforts and to encourage joint purchase of databases that individual libraries would not be able to afford. The CDL was founded with for essentially the same purpose, but limited to UC campuses. However, LOC needed a merger with CDL, which has much greater resources, to achieve its purpose. LOC depends on state funding and the legislature will base its continued support on performance, so it may take several years before the two are fully linked.
