Libraries that are merging collections or sharing resources will benefit from the National Information Standards Organization's (NISO) Z39.50 standard to improve search and retrieval across dissimilar online library catalogs. William E. Moen, University of North Texas School of Library and Information Science, will chair a standards committee charged with producing a profile that will simplify the exchange of holdings information, a key component in statewide and regional resource sharing. According to NISO, the national profile will "be a compatible superset of the Bath Profile: An International Z39.50 Specification for Library Applications and Resource Discovery," which Moen was involved in developing. The national profile, however, will extend the Bath Profile specifications to address specific national search and retrieval requirements. The profile will follow the regular standards development procedures and is scheduled for approval by summer 2001.
