Abstract

Factories making assemblies by short‐cycle batch processes need rapid and accurate information from the shop floor to provide flexible scheduling and to accommodate the inevitable changes in production plans. The Tyre Division of the Avon Rubber Company is currently experimenting with a system of collecting production data on the shop floor and feeding it directly into a computer. In this article Mike Stoodley, Tyre Division Systems Manager, explains to Peter Smith why Avon Rubber set up the experiment and what it has established so far
