New Zealand lapses

Article Type: News From: International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management, Volume 58, Issue 2

The productivity of workers in New Zealand is slumping to almost half that of workers in the United States. A recent Department of Labour report shows productivity at the workplace is among the lowest in the OECD with New Zealand’s GDP per hour worked having fallen sharply to just 56 per cent that of the US.

Nearly all other OECD nations are considerably higher, and most other countries have productivity on the rise.

The report says New Zealand is now in the unenviable position of having a large labour productivity gap, and one of the causes may be having less skilled people taking up lower paid jobs.
