Seeing the wood and the trees

Researchers claim to have found a way to get pine trees to grow faster without losing their productivity. A study has looked at reducing the rate of juvenile wood in plantations, as the timber industry aims to speed up the pine harvest - juvenile wood cannot be used in construction because it is too soft.

The researchers suggest that by selective breeding they can get rid of the problem.

“Even though each generation takes a long time to realise those genetic gains, we are making progress one generation by one generation,” a spokesperson said.
