A recent report highlights the challenges for the leadership practices in the Canadian Health Sector. The report covered two key questions; the extent to which Canadian healthcare organisations have effective development programmes in place and secondly the extent to which the health sector is currently developing its employees.
The report highlights a key finding in that organisations in the health sector are spending less on the development of their employees than Canadian organisations as whole. The research also reported that generally employees within the health sector are even less satisfied with their development opportunities that employees in Canadian organisations as a whole.
However, the report also highlighted some positive signs for the future, including:

widespread agreement among healthcare organisations about the importance of developing employees and future leaders;
- •
many healthcare organisations feel that they are successful in using new knowledge to change their behaviours; and
- •
current leaders in healthcare organisations are committed to finding solutions for the whole community.
