ARL Bimonthly Report 216 (June 2001). This special issue features the text of the Romanes Lecture for 2000 which was delivered by William G. Bowen before the University of Oxford on October 17, 2000. The lecture considers the implications for the University of two powerful, intersecting powers the revolution in information technology and the increase in reliance on the market to solve problems of all kinds and clarifies why "digitization" and "commercialization" are propelling the University into a new world.
