Leadership preferences of German and English managers

Schneider, J. and Littrell, R.F., Journal of Management Development, 2003, Vol. 22 No. 2.

Reviews the theories that have been developed concerning the link between national culture and leadership style. Focuses on UK and German managers, asking if they have different leadership styles. Based on a review of the literature on leadership, discusses the factors that might indicate that UK and German managers would have different styles – the different education systems in each country, the approaches to teamwork and the expectations of how managers will operate. Reports research which surveyed 200 German managers and 200 UK managers using the LBDQ XII developed by Ohio State University, USA (82 managers from each country responding). Lists the 12 LBDQ XII subscales and shows the UK and German managers' responses to them. Identifies differences in the German and UK leadership factor preferences and sets out the desirable traits of leaders in each country. Briefly considers the implications for management development.
