Describes the theoretical model for leader evaluation and development developed by the Swedish armed forces. Outlines the previous systems for leadership evaluation and development that the Swedish armed forces had used before devising this new model, indicating the problems with these systems. Sets out the new model in which leadership styles are viewed as being influenced by the interplay of between leader and contextual characteristics – leadership characteristics being divided into desirable competencies and basic prerequisites, and contextual characteristics being divided into environmental, organizational and group characteristics. Within this model identifies three leadership styles – developmental leadership (or transformational leadership), which was divided into exemplary model, individualized consideration and inspiration and motivation; conventional leadership, which was divided into demand and reward, and control; and non-leadership, also known as laissez-faire leadership. Sets out the hierarchical structure into which these leadership styles were placed. Explains the instrument developed to measure these leadership styles and discusses how it was used to evaluate the leadership styles within the Swedish armed forces.
