The age menopause starts linked to genes

Article Type: Food facts From: Nutrition & Food Science, Volume 39, Issue 6.

Current research states that the “age women go through menopause may be genetically determined. This is due to the discovery by US scientists who found a new gene variant that triggers a woman's first and last menstruation”.

Lead researcher Chunyan He concludes that “Insight into the genetic factors influencing the timing of menarche and natural menopause might shed light on normal reproductive function and the prevention of the diseases associated with these two traits”.

Norma Goldman the founder of the Menopause exchange believes that all women are affected differently when going through the menopause, but realise that there are familial tendency between relatives.

With constant new research presented being aware of the symptoms and effects menopause has is the best way to understand all the new information presented.

The Menopause ask the experts answers all the questions that women ask about menopause and health-related issues:

  •   Is this the menopause?

  •   When does it start?

  •   What are its symptoms?

  •   How long can I expect them to last?

  •   What can I do to relieve them?

  •   What other health problems night I expect at this time?

  •   What else can I do to keep in good health?

As the head of a well-respected independent menopause organisation, pharmacist and health promotion expert Norma Goldman is more qualified than most to make sure women get the best menopause advice.

In her role as founder and director of The Menopause Exchange, Norma set up a panel of healthcare specialists to answer her members' questions on all aspects of the menopause. Now women everywhere can benefit from their advice in a brand new book entitled: The Menopause: Ask the Experts.

The Menopause: Ask the Experts is a collection of the most helpful – as well as the most interesting and unusual – questions sent in by real-life members of The Menopause Exchange.

Set out in Q&A format, the chapters cover a wide range of topics, including general information, symptoms, osteoporosis, hormone replacement therapy, complementary therapies, nutrition, lifestyle and self-help advice, as well as general women's health.

The expert panel is what makes The Menopause: Ask the Experts stand out from competing titles. The experts have a wealth of experience in answering the questions of real-life women with menopausal symptoms. There are other books on the menopause that include questions and answers, but the answers are written by one or two experts – usually the authors – or they stick to a particular theme. None is as wide-ranging in terms of content and expertise, as The Menopause: Ask the Experts.

The Menopause: Ask the Experts was published on March 2009, priced £12.99 and available by clicking onto www.hammersmithpress.co.uk
