China clay investment

Keywords Goonvean, Clays, Investment

A major £7.5 million investment to safeguard over 100 jobs in Cornwall's china clay industry is being made by the UK's last independent producer.

Goonvean Ltd has embarked on a major three-year redevelopment of its Trelavour Works near St Stephen to improve its ability to serve the requirements of its customers worldwide.

The investment is being made with the help of £525,000 in Regional Selective Assistance from the UK's Government Office for the South West and the proceeds from the sale of the company's Bodelva pit near St Austell to the Eden Project last year.

Goonvean commissioned building contractor E. Thomas Construction to redevelop the existing china clay processing plant at Trelavour Works in three phases. The design and build project is scheduled for completion in the year 2001.
