Low-cost and lightweight pump

Keywords: Pumps, Costs, Efficiency

Reliable and cost-effective methods of transferring liquids from drums, carboys, tanks or IBC's is an important requirement in many industries, particularly in the OEM market where pumps need to be efficient, compact and cost-effective. Pump Engineering is offering a lightweight (700 grams), injection moulded pump, which it believes meets this need (Plate 4).

With a list price of under 100, the Pageboy Toppa Drum-emptying/transfer pump is a single diaphragm pneumatically operated pump manufactured in polypropylene with a PTFE diaphragm and a choice of rubber seals. Requiring only a clean, dry, air supply, the Toppa pump is said to be easy-to-use and ideal for transferring small quantities of liquids.

The output and head depend on the liquid being pumped but as standard the Toppa pump will reportedly deliver a flowrate of up to 7.5 litres/minute and a head up to 5 bar, although higher outputs are available.

Also available from Pump Engineering is a compact, lightweight and actuated control valve which is said to combine the benefits of accurate modulating control of medium to low flow rates with optimum automated process control, is the latest addition to the Badger Meter range of valves.

The RC 860 valve can be supplied with a wide choice of accessories including digital and analogue positioners. Digital versions offered include TZID-C, SIPART PS2 and 1067, while analogue positioners include SRI 986, TZIM and 3767. This reportedly allows for maximum control flexibility and communication in process systems controlled by HART protocol and PROFIBUS.

The valve has a 1/2'' body and raised face flanges (DIN, ASA, ]SO) so it is designed to fit directly into pipelines of the same flange size and rating. The compact design of the valve is thought to make it especially attractive when flanged up to 3/4'', 1'' or 112'' line sizes for controlling flow rates within the 12'' valve size.

The important features and options of these intelligent positioners include, self- diagnostics, ]P65 protection, intrinsically safe in hazard area zone 1 or zone 2, explosion protection to Eex ia IIC T4. Position feedback 4 to 20 mA and two limit switches. To meet specific application requirements, accessories such as a gauge attachment for air supply and outputs and a booster relay, are also available.

RC 860 valves are available with body and bonnet in stainless steel, carbon steel, while monel and stellite are offered as options. Standard packing is with TFE chevron rings, with graphite also available. Standard actuator material is die cast aluminium, with 316L stainless steel as an option.
