BASF increases capacity for neopentylglycol

BASF is adding 10,000 metric tons to its annual capacity for neopentylglycol (NPG) at its Verbund site Ludwigshafen. This puts the global annual NPG capacity of the company at 155,000 metric tons by the end of 2007. The capacity increase is due to a growing demand for the versatile chemical intermediate, mainly in coatings applications. For example, NPG is a tried and tested essential component for eco-efficient powder coating resins. It is also used for unsaturated polyester and alkyd resins, which serve as binders in a variety of liquid coatings.
