TDG's relationship with ICI spans three decades

Having worked with ICI for over 20 years, the recent renewal of their warehousing and distribution contract will mean TDG's partnership with the company, now part of Akzo Nobel, one of the world's leading industrial companies, spans its third decade.
The contract which runs from January 1, 2008 for five years will see TDG providing warehousing and distribution services from two main operating centres in Goole and Stowmarket for household brands such as Dulux, Cuprinol and Polycell.
From these sites and eight outbases TDG's 467 operations staff ship 285,000 tonnes of paint each year with delivery accuracy and timeliness scores of 99.8-99.9 percent, respectively, in part due to the recent installation of voice recognition technology.
“Implementing voice picking technology has been really successful and it's helped us deliver consistently high-service levels to ICI,” said Alan Buttery, Business Director at TDG. “We pick 59 million cans of paint each year and guarantee next day delivery, so maximum accuracy in the shortest time is absolutely essential.”
The relationship between these two companies started with TDG providing haulage but today it supports ICI with end-to-end supply chain solutions which extend as far as China for accessory products such as brushes and sprayers. Recently, TDG has also started recovering cardboard and polythene waste from the network of ICI trade and retail outlets. TDG processes it back at the operating centres and sells it on for recycling.
Peter Lidstone, ICI's supply chain Director acknowledged TDG's contribution. “Their investment in voice recognition technology and their work on waste recovery have helped us save money and improve efficiency,” he commented. “They've played a key role in helping us reach our sustainability targets and they also won our Supplier of the Year Award for 2007.”
