Notes on key reviews in this issue

  • African American Newspapers, 1827-1998 (RR 2012/140). A new fulltext database from Readex, part of the company’s America’s Historical Newspapers collection. Covering over 200 titles, this is the most comprehensive source for fulltext African American newspapers.

  • Dictionary of Entomology (RR 2012/124). Second edition of this CABI title, first published in 2001, now expanded to include 43,000 definitions.

  • Encyclopedia of Power (RR 2012/109). Another Sage Publications encyclopedia providing nearly 400 entries covering all aspects of “power” in relation to political and social science, international relations, public policy, social psychology, etc.

  • Food Cultures of the World Encyclopedia (RR 2012/111). A major new work from ABC-Clio available as an e-book or in four print volumes. As the title implies, the set takes a geographical approach, each volume covering a region of the world. Different in focus to Scribner’s earlier and more US-centric Encyclopedia of Food and Culture (RR 2003/370).

  • Gale Encyclopedia of Children’s Health (RR 2012/126). New edition of this recently published four volume Gale set (RR 2006/210 for review of first edition) covering child health from infancy through to adolescence.

  • Global Health Library (RR 2012/127). World Health Organization (WHO) freely accessible database launched in 2005 pulling data from Medline and a variety of regional health databases such as African Index Medicus and Latin American and Caribbean Health Science Literature.

  • Guide to Reference (RR 2012/102). Review of the ALA’s online subscription database intended as a successor to the now discontinued print Guide to Reference Books. Several print “spin-offs” from the database are available, one of which, ALA Guide to Sociology and Psychology Reference, was previously reviewed in these columns (RR 2011/260).

  • Historical Dictionary of the War in Vietnam (RR 2012/143). One of the most substantial recent contributions to the Scarecrow Press Historical Dictionaries of War, Revolution and Civil Unrest series.

  • Synagogues of Britain and Ireland (RR 2012/106). The definitive architectural survey of synagogues in the British Isles from the UK arm of Yale University Press, also publisher’s the Pevsner series of guides.

  • Wiley-Blackwell Encyclopedia of Human Evolution (RR 2012/132). A new two volume encyclopedia from Wiley-Blackwell, offering 5,000 mainly short entries and without illustration, aimed at the academic market.
