New Web break detection sensor

New Web break detection sensor

Keywords: Sensors, Image processing

The new non-contact VISIEYE sensor (Plate 6), developed by Vision Systems Oy of Jyväskylä, Finland and based on CCD-sensor technology with high-speed image processing, replaces many conventional sensors and measurement devices on paper-making and processing machines. It not only detects Web breaks; it also measures edge positions of Web, wire or felt. VISIEYE is much more than a monitoring device: it generates control outputs in the event of Web breaks as well as control signals when the edge position of a paper Web, wire or felt needs to be measured and controlled. Owing to the fact that VISIEYE monitors the Web position on wire/felt at the same time as it monitors the Web itself, the VISIEYE can give reliable real-time information whether or not a break has occurred.

The measurement head is located in a compact stainless steel enclosure (230 × 300× 117 mm); which also contains a lighting unit comprising long-lasting super-bright LEDs. A special window-cleaning nozzle prevents the ingress of dirt and moisture. The operating temperature range is from +10 to +125°C when a Vortec air-cooling system is fitted. A maximum of two measuring heads can be connected to a field cabin. Signals from the measurement heads are processed in the field cabin, which may be up to 55 m distant and where a selection of I/O connections provides the interface between VISIEYE and the customer's automation system.

The VISIEYE withstands the aggressive conditions present in paper-making machines. It is mounted, on customized mounting brackets, away from the Web. Because the sensor is outside the Web area, dirt and condensation water do not drip onto the Web and the device is easy to access and to service.
