Flash floods will increase in frequency in the Gulf
Friday, April 26, 2024
Significance
The Gulf countries experienced the heaviest rainfall in 75 years over the period April 14-18. Dubai was hit by precipitation levels of around 250 millimetres within 24 hours, almost double the normal annual rainfall. As a result, public life was severely disrupted, including schooling, with temporary airport closures.
Impacts
- Real estate will likely require higher investment to ensure climate adaptation, while insurance costs will also rise.
- The aviation sector will increasingly prepare mitigation plans to limit weather-related closures and delays.
- Collective action to counter climate change could help deepen Gulf unity.
