Findings

Those who stay in this world will never learn another one, twentieth century US statistician W. Edwards Deming once warned. As the transformation into a knowledge‐based economy gathers pace, such advice has never been more relevant than it is today. Change inevitably calls for new and higher skill levels and organizations without such competencies at their disposal run the real risk of getting left behind. So, how do organizations address this growing concern? How can they equip their employees with the skills needed to successfully meet current and, more importantly, future challenges? Not surprisingly, most expect training to provide effective answers. Like everything else, however, training must eventually succumb to Father Time and even tried and trusted methods may no longer be up to the task. Take, for instance, the instructional method of learning. Some observers firmly believe that this model belongs in the era when a job in production was most people's destiny. They argue that the discrete nature of learning typical of this method hardly offers sufficient preparation to deal with the challenges that constantly emerge within today's rapidly evolving world.

Practical implications

Provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world's leading organizations.

Originality/value

The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy‐to‐digest format.
