Dear readers,

More than 50 years have passed since the term “Tribology” was coined in the famous Jost report in 1966. Since then, tribology as an interdisciplinary science has gained more and more attention over the years and is now recognized as one of the key disciplines in tackling friction and wear problems in moving parts. A successful special issue about 50 years of tribology and sustainable manufacturing was published in our journal last year by our colleagues from Malaysia with Associate Professor Mohd Fadzli Bin Abdollah as the guest editor. The growing digitalization and topics such as e-mobility are challenges of our generation also involving tribology related questions.

Within this issue, we are happy to offer you a broad spectrum of 15 exciting research articles covering topics from the development of new hydraulic oils, theoretical and experimental aspects of impact wear and even carbon nanotubes as additives in castor oils up to nanogreases. Furthermore, a new special issue concerning the upcoming TurkeyTrib 2018 will appear at the end of this year.

Besides that, it is a particular pleasure to introduce our new Associate Editor, Professor Dr. Andreas Rosenkranz, who has recently joined our team and will support us to carefully select high-quality manuscripts in the field of tribology. Professor Rosenkranz studied Materials Science and Engineering at Saarland University in Germany and moved as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow to San Diego. He worked for one year in Frank Talke’s lab in the Center for Magnetic Recording Research at the University of California, San Diego. Since February 2018, he has been appointed as a Professor in Materials Tribology at the University of Chile. To that end, we have also invited new editorial advisory board members to join our journal. We are delighted to welcome Professor Dr Michael Weigand from TU Wien and Professor Dr Aleksandar Vencl from the University of Belgrade on our editorial board.

While we are fortunate to have the assistance of our valuable and experienced review team, we are always interested in hearing from any of you who would like to get involved in helping us review papers submitted. New reviewers will certainly help us, and it is a role that for many readers could add to your tribology experience.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes from Vienna…
