Purpose – considers how the role of learning and development will develop over the coming years. Design/methodology/approach – quotes from trainers and learning and development managers from major UK organizations about the priorities for their profession. Also quotes from the IBM Global Business Service’s 2005 CEO Study about how senior managers want learning and development to support their organizations. Discusses how learning can be embedded in organizations and identifies the role that learning and development professionals can play in achieving this. Also discusses how the learning and development function should be structured and how it should position itself within the organization. Findings – argues that learning and development professionals have the opportunity to shape the role of learning and development within the organization and to ensure that its critical role in organizational success is recognized.
