IBM’s HR takes a risk

Purpose – Describes the business transformation initiative at IBM that was designed to build competitive advantage for the company based on its human capital. Design/methodology/approach – Quotes from senior human resource managers at IBM about the human resource strategy that underpins this, describing the ways in which the delivery of human resource services has been changed to support it. Focuses on the program set up to match the competences and skills that are needed by the firm to succeed in the future, to the competences and skills of its employees, explaining how this is being achieved. Describes how the human resource management department has been developed to deliver this strategy. Findings – Argues that IBM’s human resources strategy is highly ambitious but that it could hold the key to the transformation of IBM’s business.
