In association with. Centre for Disaster Resilience, School of the Built Environment, the University of Salford, UK and International Journal of Disaster Resilience in the Built Environment.

The RICS’ COBRA 2010 Research Conference to be held at Dauphine Université Paris, France, on 2-3 September 2010 will feature a Disaster Management stream organised by the Centre for Disaster Resilience at the University of Salford, UK in association with the International Journal of Disaster Resilience in the Built Environment.

Contributions are invited for this themed session on Disaster Management which aims to stimulate ideas arising from research by exploring a range of perspectives from which the construction industry is able to contribute towards improved resilience to disasters and by facilitating the dissemination of the existing knowledgebase. These will take the form of scholarly written papers for presentation at the COBRA Conference by their authors. All contributions will be subjected to prior peer-review and will also be published in the formal proceedings of the RICS COBRA 2010 Conference. Contributions are also encouraged from postgraduate researchers, bringing together the international postgraduate research community in the field to present and discuss their research. Accordingly, a stream of activities and papers dedicated to postgraduate researchers in Disaster Management will be held.

Some of the themes that will be dealt with are (but not limited to): disaster mitigation, response and reconstruction; restoration of major infrastructure and rehabilitation; construction project management for post-disaster reconstruction; assessment of disaster-related damage; building resilience auditing; procuring and supplying temporary services and shelter; post disaster construction waste management; risk reduction and continuity management; linking reconstruction to sustainable economic development; Participatory approaches to reconstruction, and empowerment of women and vulnerable groups; knowledge management practices at different phases of the disaster lifecycle; disaster risk reduction; climate change; financial management, governance and transparency; corporate social responsibility; law and regulatory frameworks; post conflict reconstruction.

Other features of the Disaster Management stream at RICS COBRA 2010 will include:

  • Best paper award in collaboration with the International Journal of the Disaster Resilience in the Built Environment.

  • Authors of selected papers will be invited to submit their papers for consideration by the International Journal of the Disaster Resilience in the Built Environment.

  • Special session for postgraduate researchers researching in Disaster Management.
