Abstract

Purpose

To describe how the SCURL Special Needs Group carried out an audit of individual member's facilities and services, creating a tool designed to be useful in benchmarking minimum levels of service and in encouraging libraries to share ideas and best practice.

Design/methodology/approach

A descriptive account.

Findings

That such an audit allows libraries to demonstrate to themselves, their users and their paymasters that they have compliance with the current legislation. It also gives the knowledge that they can provide and promote parity of service with like institutions and share best practice for the benefit of their customers.

Research limitations/implications

A specific account of one particular example of good practice.

Practical implications

A highly practical account of the implementation of an effective tool for measuring service quality.

Originality/value

The finding that, if an audit is carried out appropriately, compliance with legislation and high quality service delivery can go hand in hand.
