Abstract

Purpose

The paper is presented as part of the 80th birthday commemorations of Library Review. It seeks to discuss taking a more interventionist line in helping library users develop their reading habit.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides a reflective viewpoint.

Findings

The paper finds that public librarians should be more proactive in helping users develop their reading skills by using the wide literature in the field.

Originality/value

The paper is of interest as a historical paper related to libraries and reading.
