This book contains papers from the Satellite Meeting organised by the International Federation of Library Association's (IFLA's) Management and Marketing Section held in Bergen, Norway from 9‐11 August 2005. This conference was held immediately prior to the World Library and Information Congress in Oslo, Norway. All but two of the 31 presentations given in Bergen are published in this book, representing the work of 38 authors from 14 countries.

The papers are arranged in the order in which they were presented at the conference, and the detailed conference program is included in the Preface. Each full paper includes an abstract. Many papers include useful charts, diagrams and illustrations and most also contain bibliographies. One paper is in French, however it does include an abstract in English.

The themes addressed in the papers range from performance evidence, the use of statistics, quality issues, standards, user satisfaction surveys and performance indicators. Many of the papers are based on the author's own practical experience(s) and describe the local library environment, the methodologies used to collect and analyse data and an explanation of the conclusions reached or outcomes achieved.

Feedback from several colleagues who attended this conference indicates that it was excellent, and the quality of the papers of the papers published in this book attest to this. For those of us who were unable to attend, this publication not only provides a valuable record, but also a useful and relevant set of papers around the conference theme.
