Abstract

Sets out the US legislation that makes job discrimination illegal, setting out the six main types of discrimination that are proscribed ‐ disability, age, sexual harassment, race, sexual orientation and gender. Assesses the success of diversity training in removing discrimination from the workplace and sets out the reasons why it has failed. Identifies four steps that companies should take to prevent discrimination ‐ accept that discrimination takes place and set up a zero tolerance for it; stop using the diversity label; focus on the behaviours that need to be changed; and develop top‐down commitment for a plan of action to end discrimination.
