Abstract

Purpose

This paper proposes investigating the JISC 5/99 Programme and the developing Information Environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reports on the experience of undertaking a three‐year formative evaluation of the JISC 5/99 Programme and the developing Information Environment, reflects on the methodologies which were chosen and considers the ways in which the evaluation team engaged with projects and other stakeholders.

Findings

The paper finds that an emphasis on outcomes and impacts helped the Programme to focus its activities. The paper includes reflective conclusions concerning the experiences of students, tutors and others involved in using networked information services in support of learning.

Originality/value

The paper is useful to those wishing to make use of the Information Environment.
