Abstract
Purpose
Explores the reasons for, and possible solutions to, the shortage of suitably trained and experienced employees in information technology.
Findings
Discusses the importance of ongoing development for existing IT employees and the need to invest in recruiting new talent for the industry. Explains how internal IT apprenticeship and trainee schemes can help to promote employee retention.
Practical implications
Highlights the benefits that one company, Comunica, has obtained from its employee development and calls for other major employers to follow suit.
Originality/value
Provides a useful reminder of the need for increased investment in developing IT skills.
