Abstract

This paper discusses the current trends in provision of forensic mental health and social care services in the context of past and current international experience and national strategy development. The introduction reviews the policy framework which has informed national strategy development, followed by a discussion of the paradox or challenge in the gap between policy and public opinion and the contradictory views expressed in public opinion itself. The paper then identifies the characteristics of current trends in forensic service development, moving on to examine how forensic mental health services can be reshaped and the implications for mental health and social care professionals.
